From Richard Chai, A Cold-Weather Warning

May 10, 2012 at 10:01 am

Just in case you didn’t notice, the temperatures are dropping. Richard Chai, for his part, did. His new temporary pop-up shop, at the west Chelsea space under the High Line that played host to Waris Ahluwalia’s recent installation, is designed to be a glacial, Styrofoam-carved ice cave. For his first standalone store—albeit a temporary one—Chai was after the shock of the new. “I didn’t want a straightforward retail space,” he explained at the opening bash on Friday night, co-hosted by The Last Magazine. Mission accomplished.Designed in collaboration with the architecture firm Snarkitecture, the space will sell Chai’s men’s and women’s collections until October 31. On Friday, Emily Haines and her band Metric toasted the chilly space with a short set (and a Strokes cover) that had Julie Gilhart, Jamie Johnson, and Last’s Magnus Berger smiling. “I love and live for Metric—I’m a super big fan!” Chai explained, as the crowd headed for the after-party at Le Bain. Makes sense, that—after the ice, the poolside thaw. The Richard Chai pop-up installation is located at 504 W. 24th Street, NYC.

On Our Radar: Givenchy Spring ‘12 Accessories

Riccardo Tisci knows how to put on a show. That much was very clear at his Spring ‘12 menswear show in Paris at the city’s glass-walled Centre Pompidou: It drew not only every editor, stylist, photographer, and well-connected friend in town, but also a throng of Parisian passersby, who pressed against the windows for a look. The show itself was spectacular—that is to say, a spectacle. Tisci’s bird-of-paradise print, splashed on tennis skirts and suiting, was one of the week’s strongest statements, complemented by a series of chunky, plasticized sandals that leave no doubt of their maker. (”GIVENCHY” is embossed on the soles—walk in them, and you’ll literally leave the label’s calling card in your wake.)I loved the look, but for everyday wear, I prefer my statements a little quieter. Which is why, when Givenchy’s Spring lookbook hit my desk this week, a pair of sandals (OK, flip-flops) that didn’t make it onto the catwalk caught my eye. They’re printed with a bit of classic cheesecake, a nudie illustration borrowed from the Fall ‘11 women’s collection. But when you’re wearing them, she’s covered; nobody’s the wiser. Know and tell, not show and tell, let’s say. Paradise! Hold the birds.—Matthew Schneier

Carla Gugino In Dolce & Gabbana – “Every Day” LA Premiere

May 9, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Carla Gugino shimmered her way down the red carpet at the “Every Day” LA Premiere this week.

The brunette actress wore a red hot fully sequined Dolce & Gabbana sleeveless dress.

I love the striking colour on her, but I’m not too crazy about what’s going on around her waist.

I wish the elasticated waistband was covered by either a contrasting or same coloured belt.

Can someone please tell me if there is a shoe famine in LA, because her gold heels are hideous and do not work with her dress.

Viktor & Rolf have got a brand-new bag—an airline bag, to be precise. The Dutch design duo has created a special amenity kit for KLM’s business-class passengers. The bow-front bag comes stocked with toothpaste and a toothbrush, an eye mask, lip balm, face cream, socks, a pen, and ear plugs. (For gents, there’s a bow-less version, too.) Not a bad reason to upgrade. [Viktor & Rolf]The September Issue’s R.J. Cutler returns: Deadline Hollywood reports that HBO has green-lit a Cutler-produced half-hour comedy pilot about the fashion industry, Spring/Fall. Téa Leoni will star as half of a dysfunctional pair of partners in the fashion industry; Kate Robin, formerly a writer-producer on HBO’s Six Feet Under, penned the script. [Deadline via Daily Front Row]Is Anna Dello Russo a “total fashion victim”? That’s not the haters talking; that’s ADR herself, explaining her look to CNN. She seems to be in pretty good spirits about it—and we would be too with a closet like hers. Check out the video for a look inside her Paris fashion week suite at the Ritz. Zoe Saldana Will Help You Find A Stylist

Comments Off
May 8, 2012 at 8:31 am

Zoe Saldana might be better known for her day job as a successful actress, but she’s also translated her burgeoning fashion interests into a second job as the founder/partner of My Fashion Database. Two years ago, when Saldana launched the site, along with her fiancé, former model Keith Britton, and the help of their close friend Jordan Glassberg, they were simply trying to provide fast, efficient answers to their own style questions: Who shot that editorial in V magazine from September 2008? Who was the manicurist for the recent Lindsey Wixson spread in i-D? This month, MyFDB, dubbed “fashion’s IMDB,” was relaunched with expanded features, including the ability to view ad campaigns and immediately shop the looks. Tonight, the actress will celebrate the relaunch with, what else, a party in New York as fashion week here comes to a close. Saldana spoke to Style.com about MyFDB, mused over a Prabal collaboration, and the next job title she wants: intern.—Kristin Studeman

What prompted you to create MyFDB?The initial idea came about in 2006. It came from our desire to cater to the things that were missing for us. As an actress it was hard for me to feel so aloof on what goes on in fashion. Every time you leave your house, you are wearing clothes and you have to create an image. We wanted to give people all the info they need for that. Are there any issues in particular you were trying provide answers for with MyFDB?Yes—what am I going to wear? Besides Style.com, which is so informative, no one else out there is really giving you information like this. With MyFDB, you can find out who is this photographer, who are the stylists that work with certain brands, who are the hair and makeup people that I might find interesting. It’s for things like that that are hard to find. There wasn’t that one site to where you could find out Lara Stone’s editorials, who does she have a contract with, etc. What is the most useful feature of your site?I love that MyFDB has the largest directory of fashion people and companies out there. That, to me, is one of the best features. It just gives you access without taking away the class and the poise that fashion has. It’s not a social network. I would say it’s classier than that, maybe that’s not the right word, but it’s a useful tool for people. What features do you hope to add to the site in the near future?I would like to provide a chance to see vintage magazines from back in the day and see how magazines have evolved according to our cultural and political evolution. That would be pretty cool, right?I know you have been asked before if you would design your own collection and you sound hesitant. What about a collaboration with a designer, like your good friend Prabal Gurung? That is something that I would love to do. I would only do it if I could collaborate with someone like Prabal. He’s like a little Meryl Streep when it comes to fashion—he is just stellar. There are many amazing designers that are completely prolific. To sit and be in the same room as them when they are putting their collections together would be really cool. From Tom Ford to Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy, those guys have paved the way. It would be amazing actually to do an internship.I am guessing any and all of those designers would love to have Zoe Saldana as their intern. Are you serious?I would get them coffee just so I could listen. I have been to Francisco Costa’s work studio in New York and to see him working, it’s wonderful. They [designers] are true pirates and rock stars. They are kind of like Nascar drivers. There is no such thing as an off-season and they are racing year round. Not many people understand that. It’s true. So back to Prabal, what would a Prabal x Zoe collection look like?On Prabal—I don’t know. I like to take things day by day. If I did it, it would not be for the sake of designing or being pop-y. If I do decide to design, I would treat it the same way I have taken my career. It’s about strategy, but it’s really all heart at the end of the day. What is your mood, style-wise these days?Right now I am wearing this little Alexander Wang tight gray skirt—I bought like two of them. It’s been so hot here in California so I am really into tight little dresses. I’m not a floral-print person; it’s too prissy for me.Action movies are your thing right now. Is this a genre you want to stay in for a while, or what roles are you eager to play next? That’s like asking, “What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?” Oh, that sounds so good right now. You should go get yourself some gelato! What else are you up to these days?Besides observing what Colombiana does at the box office, I have been editing a short I did for Glamour magazine, which has been pretty cool.

Michael Owen Tissot Watch 2011: Couturier GMT

As far as I’m concerned the last version of Michael Owen’s Tissot Watch was launched in 2009; and two years afterward – recently the Swiss watch manufacturer has just released the new model called TISSOT COUTURIER GMT MICHAEL OWEN. Produced in limited quantity f 4 999 pieces worldwide the new edition includes the home and away colors of Michael Owen’s current team (Manchester United Football Club): “red white black” as well as the player’s jersey number: “7” framing his signature on the case back.

Taking a basic design of Tissot Couturier GMT Collection the special edition watch is differentiated by those two features mentioned above plus the additional benefit of a chronograph – instead of a lone second time zone display as appeared on the regular model. The pusher mechanism as opposed to a crown replica watches will definitely ease a frequent traveler in changing time zones on the fly; by simply tapping the either of the pushers to move the second time zone hour hand forward and backward.

The football genius MICHAEL OWEN (born December 14th 1979 in Chester) has been in successful partnership with Tissot for more than 13 years. Started his professional career in Liverpool then move to Real Madrid Newcastle United and now Manchester United FC christian dior watch he was arguably one of the world’s most respected footballer. He was the Liverpool’s top goal scorer from 1997 – 2004; awarded 2001 Ballon d’Or; internationally the England’s youngest player and youngest goal scorer of the 1998 senior England National team.

Domino Delivers?

May 7, 2012 at 6:37 pm

Proof that Domino, the former shelter mag, still has cachet came in the form of a line that snaked around West 9th Street, across Fifth Avenue, and down West 10th Street on Saturday morning as the design savvy heeded the call to the Tastemaker’s Tag Sale organized by former editors Tom Delavan and Dara Caponigro (with additional contributions from the likes of Rita Konig and Deborah Needleman). “I heard it was a two-hour wait, and people seemed happy to linger,” said Delavan, who watched a Balenciaga dress sell for $150 and bolts of fabrics fly faster than expected. Hungry for more? Delevan and co. are considering another TTS in the Hamptons this summer, or they might make it an annual event. Stay tuned for details.

Net-A-Porter Gets (Even More) Organized

May 7, 2012 at 3:48 pm

It always seems as if e-tailer Net-a-Porter is pretty nimble in staying a couple steps ahead of our online needs, helpfully aiding any laptop shopping ventures to function successfully with the least frustration. Today, the site launches another feature that will make getting a fix of Roland Mouret or Rick Owens even easier for NAP addicts the world over: seven boutiques organized by type. There’s the Essentials shop with those workhorse basics like black cardigans from Vince; a Vacation store that covers both snow and sand; a Salon with serious soigné fashion; and the Cutting Edge corner with seriously cool fashion. “We wanted to re-create the in-store shop floor experience by aligning relevant designers,” explains founder Natalie Massenet. “It personalizes the shopping experience and provides customers with an instant connection to the product as they immediately identify which boutique is relevant to them.” Still, there’s no rule decreeing that the Salon girl can’t click over to the Cutting Edge side, and vice versa.

Runway To Sidewalk – Cat Deeley In Stella McCartney

May 6, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Cat Deeley has been in the US presenting “So You Think You Can Dance?” so we haven’t seen her much in the UK.

She was back last week and seen out on the town attending a jewelery party at the Connaught hotel in London with beau Jack Huston.

She had a ’70s vibe about her wearing a blue silk Stella McCartney Resort 2010 jumpsuit with bow tie.

She teamed it with black pointed heels, and a black white faux fur coat which she carried.

Her red-carpet dressing is equally impressive as her off-duty style.

I love this look, and I was so grateful she didn’t wear it with the runway belt.

So much for celebs vacationing incognito. Madonna and her inner circle—including her children and her boy toy, Jesus Luz—took to the seas around Portofino today to celebrate the Material Girl’s 51st birthday. In case the paparazzi were unsure of her identity, she donned a monogrammed sports jersey and matching shorts. Even odder, this was her swimwear. Madonna’s no stranger to sartorial statements, so we’re left wondering: Is this a new trend or has Madge swapped her sense of style for oversized biceps?—Romney Leader
